I began my franchise journey with a ton of questions and no clue where to start. Like anyone who grew up with information easily accessible thanks to Google, I embarked on my journey through various Google links and YouTube videos, where I first learned about franchise advisors. I soon faced my first struggle: I am considerably younger than the average age of a franchisee (44), so many people did not take me seriously. When you are looking for guidance, in my opinion, there are two important things an advisor needs to have: subject matter expertise and empathy for their client. If you merely want someone knowledgeable, I’m sure there are places you can go to acquire that knowledge, albeit slower. What Phil does uniquely, which Google cannot and many of the advisors I interviewed do not, is employ empathy. Phil listens when you speak and does not simply rephrase what you say (an expert active listening tactic). Instead Phil shows understanding and provides value where YOU need it… for your specific goals and ambitions. Yes, that means he will be honest with you – not every conversation was “warm & fuzzy”, especially if he believes you’re failing to see a potential obstacle. That brute honesty also means you’re not left wishing Phil spent more time covering fundamentals – he will focus on the heart of the matter and the tougher decision-points where you need help.
I don’t leave online reviews or feedback unless the experience was so bad that I feel compelled to ensure no one faces the issues I did. Entrepreneurship has been a goal of mine from when I was young, coming from a family of entrepreneurs. After obtaining a BSC in Accounting, I became a Staff Accountant and ultimately rose to become VP of Accounting.
